Dua for the Protection of Your Baby

Dua for the Protection of Your Baby

دُعَاءُ حِفْظِ الْجَنِينِ وَالْمَوْلُودِ
The Prophet ﷺ used these exact words to seek protection for his grandsons al-Hasan and al-Husayn, and told the companions that Ibrahim used them for his sons Isma'il and Ishaq (Bukhari 3371). It is the inherited dua of fathers and mothers over their children — from the prophets down to you.
During pregnancy, mothers recite it over the baby in the womb; after birth, it becomes a daily shield recited over the newborn. It seeks Allah's perfect protection from every harm: seen and unseen.

Dua of Protection for Children

U'idhuka bi-kalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin wa min kulli 'aynin lammah
I seek protection for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.
Source: Sahih al-Bukhari 3371

When to Recite It

Recite it daily during pregnancy — many mothers pair it with the morning and evening adhkar — and continue after birth as the Sunnah protection over your child. Reciting Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) alongside it completes the protection routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I recite this dua for my baby while still pregnant?

Yes. While the hadith describes the Prophet ﷺ reciting it over born children, scholars encourage mothers to recite it over the womb as a general supplication for protection — dua for an unborn child is valid and was the practice of the prophets, as in "My Lord, grant me from among the righteous" (Quran 37:100).

How do I protect my pregnancy from the evil eye?

The Sunnah protection is remembrance: this dua, Ayat al-Kursi, the three Quls morning and evening, and saying ma sha Allah / tabarak Allah when blessings are mentioned. Protection comes from Allah alone — amulets and strings have no basis in the Sunnah.
