Surah Maryam During Pregnancy — Why Mothers Recite It

سُورَةُ مَرْيَمَ
No surah is more beloved to pregnant Muslim women than Surah Maryam — the chapter named after the only woman mentioned by name in the Quran, and the one that describes her pregnancy and labor in intimate detail.
In it, Maryam withdraws to a remote place, labor pains drive her to the trunk of a palm tree, and Allah responds with tenderness: "Do not grieve; your Lord has placed beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates" (19:24-25). Provision, comfort, and care — delivered to a mother at her most vulnerable hour.
There is no specific hadith mandating Surah Maryam in pregnancy; mothers recite it for its meanings — to walk through pregnancy and birth in the company of the Quran's most honoured mother, and to draw hope from how Allah carried her through it.

Surah Maryam 19:24-25 — Allah's care for Maryam in labor

Fanadaha min tahtiha alla tahzani qad ja'ala rabbuki tahtaki sariyya. Wa huzzi ilayki bijidh'in-nakhlati tusaqit 'alayki rutaban janiyya
So he called her from below her: "Do not grieve; your Lord has placed beneath you a stream. And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates."

When to Recite It

Many mothers recite Surah Maryam weekly through the first trimester and return to verses 19:22-26 as birth approaches. Recite with the translation at least once — the benefit is in living its meanings, not only its sounds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a hadith about reciting Surah Maryam during pregnancy?

No authentic hadith prescribes Surah Maryam specifically for pregnancy. The practice comes from the surah's subject matter — Maryam's pregnancy, labor, and Allah's care for her — which makes it a natural companion for expecting mothers. Reciting any Quran during pregnancy carries reward.

Which verses of Surah Maryam relate to childbirth?

Verses 19:16-26 tell the story: the glad tidings of Isa, the pregnancy, the labor pains at the palm trunk ("Would that I had died before this"), and Allah's response of water, dates, and comfort. Verse 19:25 is often highlighted — even Maryam was asked to shake the tree, a reminder that trust in Allah pairs with effort.

Do dates help with labor?

The Quran's image of fresh dates given to Maryam in labor is echoed by modern studies suggesting date consumption in late pregnancy is associated with improved labor outcomes. Many Muslim mothers eat dates daily in the final weeks, drawing on both the verse and the research.
